What is Certification?
Certification is a way to demonstrate your mastery of the Human Resources field and ensure you are keeping up with new developments in the field. It provides recognition of professional achievement and a tool for career advancement. The two levels of certification available are: Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
What knowledge areas are tested?
HRCI exams test knowledge in the following areas:
- Strategic Management
- Workforce Planning & Employment
- Human Resource Development
- Compensation & Benefits
- Employee & Labor Relations
- Occupational Health, Safety & Security
The PHR exam focuses on the technical/operational aspects of HR while the SPHR exam focuses on the strategic/policy related areas of HR. It is recommended to have 2-4 years experience for the PHR exam and 6-8 years for the SPHR exam.

- In the US? 59,000+ (about 60% PHR, 40% SPHR)
- In the South East? 15,700+ (about 60% PHR, 40% SPHR)
- In North Carolina? 1900+ (about 60% PHR, 40% SPHR)
- How many take the test each year? About 24,000 (approx 14,400 PHR, 9600 SPHR)
- How has that changed? in 1996 only about 5000 took the PHR and 2800 the SPHR. The numbers are steadily rising as HR professionals and hiring companies recognize the value of certification.
- Pass/Fail Rate? Approx. 67% pass the PHR and approx. 55% pass the SPHR
